Building Capacity to Deliver Quality Family Planning

The Opportunity

Family planning is one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century. The availability of family planning services allows individuals to achieve desired birth spacing and family size, and contributes to improved health outcomes for infants, children, women, and families (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

Our Strategy

Throughout our history, Cardea has been proud to collaborate with family planning providers — ranging from state, local, territorial and tribal health departments to hospital systems to Planned Parenthood affiliates to community and migrant health centers to community and faith-based organizations. For more than 30 years, we served as the Family Planning Training Centers in U.S. Public Health Service Regions VI, IX, and X. We continued that foundational work as the National Training Center for Service Delivery, one of five Family Planning National Training Centers funded by the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Population Affairs to enhance the capacity of Title X family planning grantees and agencies to deliver reproductive health services to the Title X community and beyond.

We deliver customized training to family planning providers and their teams in alignment with Providing Quality Family Planning Services: Recommendations of CDC and the U.S. Office of Population Affairs (QFP). We employ diverse formats, including face-to-face events, audioconferences, videoconferences, and eLearning.

The Impact

Our clients attest to the importance and usefulness of our training in helping their teams meet quality family planning recommendations. Clinical providers have received content and skills-based training to support activities such as initiating male exams and offering long acting reversible contraception to their clients. Clinic administrators and managers have gained confidence and skills to coach and mentor staff. Clinic teams have learned to implement improved client-centered counseling techniques. And, ultimately, clients receive accessible, high quality, culturally proficient, and compassionate services.
