Program Monitoring

Program monitoring refers to efforts to track program goals, activities and results over time. Data derived from monitoring are needed to determine whether the program's objectives are being met. This often implies monitoring 'inputs' (client, agency or system characteristics) and program activities, as well as results or outcomes. Outcomes often include client knowledge, attitudes, behaviors or status (e.g. disease condition).

This type of assessment is primarily intended for the accountability and improvement of a particular intervention or program. It generally does not lead to producing moderate or strong evidence of program efficacy.

For more information on one particular type of outcome monitoring you can explore the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s website addressing HIV and program interventions: http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/evaluation/health_depts/guidance/supp-handbook/outcome-mon.htm
